Intercom Installation Queens

Queens has more co-op apartments than any other borough, and most of them are in six-story elevator buildings put up between the 1930s and the 1960s — with intercoms not much newer. Add garden-apartment complexes with a dozen separate entrances, attached two-family houses on every side street, and glass towers going up in Long Island City, and you get a borough where no two intercom jobs look the same.

Impera Security Systems installs and replaces intercom systems across Queens — from Astoria to Jamaica, Flushing to Rockaway. Audio, video, app-based, or 2-wire retrofit, for co-ops, condos, rental buildings, garden complexes, two- and three-family houses, and commercial properties. We handle the whole project, from assessment and board proposal through installation and resident onboarding.

Queens Buildings We Work In

Here's how we handle the building types we see most often in Queens.

Six-story co-ops in Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens, and Jackson Heights. Elevator buildings with 50 to 150 units, original riser wiring, and a board that wants a modern system without a technician in every apartment. We test the wiring first — 2-wire retrofit often means monitors in every unit with no new cable runs, and app-based systems mean nothing inside apartments at all.

Garden-apartment complexes in Bayside, Fresh Meadows, Flushing, and Briarwood. Multiple low-rise buildings, each with its own entrance, sharing one management. We design one system with a panel at every entry and a single directory the managing agent controls — and phase the work building by building.

Attached and semi-detached two- and three-family houses in Astoria, Woodside, Elmhurst, Ridgewood, and Ozone Park. Owner-landlords replacing a dead buzzer for a couple of tenants. A simple, reliable audio or video system with per-unit calling, sized and priced for a small building.

New high-rises and condos in Long Island City, Astoria, and Downtown Flushing. Boards and developers who want an app-based, cloud-managed system integrated with fob access, cameras, and a concierge desk. ButterflyMX, 2N, and Swiftlane are the usual fits.

Prewar walk-ups in Jackson Heights, Sunnyside, and Woodside. Historic-district buildings with courtyard entrances and original details. Careful placement and hardware that respects the exterior.

Mixed-use on Queens Boulevard, Northern Boulevard, Steinway Street, and Main Street. Ground-floor retail with apartments above, needing separate entry paths and durable street-level hardware.

A tall, narrow white security or intercom panel mounted on a black wall, featuring a camera at the top, a speaker or microphone below that, and various openings and slots further down.

What's Different About Installing in Queens

Co-op boards and management companies. Much of the Queens intercom market runs through boards and the management companies that serve them. We provide a proposal the board can vote on, the certificate of insurance the management company requires, and a schedule that works within the building's rules.

Multi-entrance properties. Garden complexes and courtyard buildings can have six, ten, or more entrances. We design a single system across all of them so a resident's directory entry works at every door and the managing agent updates one list, not ten.

Riser wiring in 1950s buildings. Postwar Queens co-ops often have intercom wiring that's old but sound. We'd rather reuse it than open walls in a hundred apartments, and we test before we promise.

Historic districts. Jackson Heights, Sunnyside Gardens, Douglaston, and other landmarked areas call for placements and hardware that respect the exterior. We can advise when Landmarks review may apply.

Driveways and parking. Unlike Manhattan, most Queens buildings have somewhere to park a van. It sounds small, but it makes multi-day projects faster and cheaper.

How Queens Residents Answer the Door

Indoor monitors for co-ops with reusable wiring and long-term residents who don't want an app. App-based for rentals, new construction, and buildings that want nothing installed inside apartments. Concierge station plus resident calling for LIC and Flushing high-rises with a front desk. Telephone entry for small buildings that want the simplest system. Mixed for co-ops with a range of resident ages and preferences — usually the right answer in Queens.

Replacing an Old Intercom in a Queens Building

Most of our Queens work is replacement. The panel in the lobby is original to the building, the handsets have been failing floor by floor, and the board has been patching it for years because a full replacement sounded like a wall-opening project.

It usually isn't. We evaluate what's there — the panel, apartment stations, riser wiring, door-release hardware, and power — and tell you what can stay and what has to go. In postwar co-ops, the wiring is frequently reusable. Door strikes and panel locations often carry over. For larger buildings and garden complexes, we phase the work so no entrance is ever without a working intercom.
