Who Akuvox Is Right For
Mid-size residential buildings. Roughly 15 to 100 units, where a full enterprise IP system is more than the building needs and a basic audio buzzer is less. Akuvox gives monitors, video, and app access at a price that fits.
Buildings that want a touchscreen at the door. Akuvox's panels have a searchable, scrolling directory that visitors and delivery drivers actually find easy to use — which matters more at a 60-unit building than a 6-unit one.
Mixed-use and small commercial. Ground-floor retail with apartments above, small office buildings, and properties that need a few controlled doors alongside the intercom. Akuvox handles both on one platform.
New construction on a budget. When the developer wants IP intercom and monitors but the spec is cost-sensitive, Akuvox is what fits.
Where it's not the best fit: prewar buildings with reusable 2-wire runs, where Comelit avoids new cabling; and large commercial buildings that need deep third-party integration, where 2N is the stronger platform.
What an Akuvox Installation Involves
Entrance panel. An Akuvox touchscreen door station at the main entrance — video, directory, face or fob reader depending on the model — with additional stations at side, service, or garage doors.
Indoor monitors. An Akuvox video monitor in each apartment, connected over the building's network. Residents see the visitor, talk to them, and release the door from the wall unit or the app.
Network cabling. Akuvox is an IP system, so each panel and monitor needs a network connection. In new construction that's designed in; in an existing building we run the cable. This is the main difference from a 2-wire retrofit and the main driver of cost.
Cloud and app setup. We configure Akuvox's cloud platform for the managing agent — directory management, remote access, visitor logs — and the resident app.
Door release and power. We connect the panels to strikes or maglocks, install power and PoE, and test release at every entrance. As a licensed locksmith, we handle the door hardware ourselves.
Timeline. Small buildings, two to three days. Larger buildings with monitors in every unit are phased by floor.
Akuvox vs. the Alternatives
Akuvox vs. 2N. Both are IP intercom systems with panels, monitors, and app access. 2N is the enterprise option — more configuration depth, broader third-party integration, higher cost. Akuvox covers the same core functions at a lower installed price. For a residential building managed by a managing agent, Akuvox usually delivers everything the board will actually use.
