door buzzer repair & installation nyc
Every apartment building in New York has one: the panel by the front door with the buttons, the handset on the kitchen wall, and the buzz that unlocks the door. When it works, nobody thinks about it. When it stops, the whole building knows by dinner — deliveries pile up on the stoop, guests stand outside calling cell phones, and the super gets a dozen texts.
Impera Security Systems repairs, replaces, and upgrades door buzzer systems for apartment buildings, brownstones, two- to six-family houses, and commercial properties across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Old talk-listen-door panels, 1980s handsets, newer video systems — whatever's on the wall, we can work on it. Whether we installed it or someone else did decades ago.

Buzzer Problems We Fix
Most buzzer calls are one of these. Recognizing the pattern is half the diagnosis.
The buzzer clicks but the door doesn't open
The most common call we get. The panel sends the signal, you hear the click, and the door stays locked. Almost always the door strike (the electric latch in the frame), the wiring to it, or a tired power supply. Sometimes a worn relay in the panel. We test the whole release circuit, not just the strike.
Nobody can hear anyone
Residents can't hear visitors, visitors can't hear residents, or it's all hum and crackle. Could be the panel, the handset, the amplifier, or the wiring between them. We trace it and fix what's actually broken.
One apartment's buzzer is dead
Everyone else works, but 4B can't be reached and can't buzz anyone in. Usually a bad handset, a loose or broken wire, or a wiring mix-up at the panel. We isolate that unit and fix it without touching the rest of the building.
The panel buttons don't work
Buttons that don't respond, names that won't scroll, a panel that's been kicked, weathered, or vandalized. We repair or replace the entry panel and reprogram the directory.
The handset fell apart
Cracked housing, broken cord, buttons that stick, a hook that won't hang up. Handsets for most common systems are still available, and swapping one is a quick visit.
The whole thing is dead
Nothing lights, nothing buzzes, nothing rings. Usually the power supply or a main wiring fault. Occasionally the panel itself. We start at the power and work outward.
Any Buzzer System, Any Age
New York buildings are full of buzzer systems that have outlived the companies that installed them. We work on all of them:
Classic talk-listen-door panels — the three-button handsets found in walk-ups across every borough (Lee Dan, TekTone, Alpha, Nutone, Pacific, and similar)
1980s–2000s audio systems — Aiphone, Linear, Mircom, and the like
Video buzzer systems — Aiphone, Comelit, and others with a screen in the apartment
App-based systems — ButterflyMX, DoorBird, Akuvox, 2N, Swiftlane, and other modern platforms
Systems with no brand name left on them — we've seen those too
If your system was installed before you owned the building and nobody knows the brand, that's fine. We'll figure it out on site.
Repair or Replace? We'll Tell You Honestly.
A lot of buzzer service calls in NYC end with a technician shrugging and handing over a quote for a brand-new system. We don't work that way.
Most buzzer problems are repairable — a strike, a handset, a power supply, a wire, a relay. We carry the common parts and fix most calls in one visit. But some systems have genuinely reached the end: the manufacturer's gone, the parts are gone, the wiring in the walls has failed, or you'd spend more each year on patches than a new system costs.
When that's the case, we'll show you what we found, explain why, and give you a straight price for a replacement — including how much of your existing wiring, strikes, and panel location can be reused. Many buildings' original riser wiring is still perfectly good; you decide, with the facts in front of you.
Upgrading a Buzzer to Video or App Entry
If you're replacing anyway, this is the moment to ask what you actually want the front door to do.
Keep it simple. A new audio buzzer system — same buttons, same handsets, just working. Least expensive, familiar to every tenant, no app required.
Add video. Residents see who's at the door on a screen or their phone before they buzz anyone in. Fewer packages walk off the stoop.
Go app-based. No handsets in apartments at all. Every call goes to the resident's phone, and the managing agent updates the tenant list from a laptop. The fastest install for larger buildings and the easiest for turnover.
We'll walk you through the options and what each costs for your building. For a deeper look, see our video intercom and building intercom pages.

Buzzer Repair for Every NYC Building
Walk-ups and small multi-family buildings. Two- to six-unit buildings in Flatbush, Bay Ridge, Astoria, Woodside, Harlem, and everywhere else — the classic NYC buzzer job. Owner-landlords who need it working again, not a sales pitch.
Larger apartment buildings and co-ops. Panels serving 20 to 200 units, where one dead line or a failing panel affects everyone. We coordinate with supers and management.
Brownstones and townhouses. Single-family and converted two- and three-unit brownstones with a buzzer at the stoop, repaired or replaced without damaging the entrance.
Storefronts and mixed-use. Buzzers at commercial doors, staff entrances, and apartments above retail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Service calls are billed on the time it takes to diagnose and repair. We explain the rate before scheduling, and any parts or additional work are quoted and approved before we proceed. Most single-fault repairs — a strike, a handset, a power supply — are completed in one visit.
-
For a small building, a new audio buzzer system typically runs $2500 installed; video and app-based systems cost more. Larger buildings scale with unit count. After a free on-site assessment, you get a written proposal with clear pricing.
-
Almost always the door strike, the wiring to it, or the power supply. Occasionally a relay in the panel. It's a common repair, and we check the full circuit rather than guessing.
-
Yes. Single-unit faults usually come down to a handset or a wire for that unit. We isolate and repair it without affecting the rest of the building.
-
Usually. The classic three-button systems are simple and parts are still made. If a system truly can't be repaired, we'll tell you and show you what a replacement involves — often reusing your existing wiring.
