ACCESS CONTROL REPAIR NYC

Access control has one job: let the right people in and keep everyone else out. When it fails, it fails in one of two directions — either the door won't open for anyone, and tenants are stuck outside calling the super, or it won't lock, and the building is open to the street. Both are emergencies, and neither waits until Monday.

Impera Security Systems diagnoses and repairs access control systems for apartment buildings, co-ops, offices, retail spaces, gyms, and commercial properties across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Readers, credentials, controllers, electric strikes, maglocks, power, wiring, and the cloud platform behind it all — whether we installed the system or someone else did.

Access Control Problems We Fix

Most service calls come down to one of these. Recognizing the pattern is half the diagnosis.

Reader not responding

No beep, no light, no reaction to any credential. Usually power, a wiring fault between the reader and controller, or a failed reader. We test power and signal before assuming the reader is dead.

Fobs or cards stopped working

Some or all credentials rejected. Could be a controller that lost its database, a sync failure with the cloud platform, expired credentials, a reader format mismatch, or a damaged fob. We isolate whether it's the credential, the reader, or the system.

Door won't unlock

The reader accepts the credential but the door stays locked. This is almost always the door hardware — a failed electric strike, a maglock that won't release, a bad relay, or a power supply that can't deliver enough current. We check the full release circuit, not just the reader.

Door won't lock or secure

The door releases but never re-locks, or the maglock doesn't hold. A closer that's not pulling the door shut, a strike that's misaligned, a maglock with a failed armature or weak power, or a door that's warped or sagging on its hinges.

Controller or power failures

The whole system, or a whole set of doors, goes down at once. Failed controller board, dead power supply, blown fuse, drained backup battery, or a network drop that took the controller offline.

Cloud dashboard or app problems

Users can't be added, changes don't reach the doors, event logs stop updating, or mobile credentials won't unlock. Usually a controller that's lost internet, a sync issue, expired licensing, or account and permission problems on the platform.

Access Control Systems We Repair

Cloud-based platforms. Brivo, Kisi, Avigilon Alta, Swiftlane, and similar systems managed from a browser or app. We troubleshoot controllers, connectivity, sync, licensing, credentials, and dashboard configuration.

Traditional on-premise systems. Older panel-based systems with local software, including systems where the software is out of date or the original installer is long gone.

Standalone keypads and readers. Single-door keypads, standalone card readers, and self-contained electronic locks on service doors, gym doors, and storage rooms.

Mixed and partially upgraded systems. Buildings that added a cloud platform to old readers, or new readers to old locking hardware. We evaluate what's actually installed rather than assuming it all has to go.

The Door Hardware Is Usually the Problem

Here's what most access control companies won't tell you: the reader and the controller are rarely the problem. The credential is accepted, the controller sends the unlock signal, and then nothing happens — because the electric strike is worn out, the maglock has lost its grip, the door closer isn't pulling the door back to latch, or the frame has shifted an eighth of an inch.

That's a locksmith problem, and most access control technicians can't fix it. They'll tell you to call a locksmith. The locksmith will look at the wires and tell you to call your access control company.

We're both. Impera is a licensed NYC locksmith with access control experience, so we work on the whole opening — strikes, maglocks, electrified locks, closers, hinges, alignment, power supplies, relays, and the readers and controllers that drive them. One visit, one diagnosis, one fix.

Network and Cloud Platform Problems

Cloud-based access control depends on the controller staying connected. When the network changes, doors keep working on their locally stored credentials, but nothing new syncs — the new tenant's fob never activates, the departed employee's credential never deactivates, and the event log goes quiet.

Controller offline. A router change, a new internet provider, a failed switch port, or a firewall setting that started blocking the controller. We get it reconnected and confirm it's syncing.

Sync and database issues. Changes made in the dashboard that never reach the door. We check the controller's connection, its stored database, and the platform status.

Licensing and accounts. Expired subscriptions, locked admin accounts, and permission problems that stop management from making changes. We sort out what's blocking access to the platform.

Mobile credentials. Bluetooth or NFC unlock not working on some or all phones. We check app configuration, reader firmware, and credential assignment.

How an Access Control Repair Call Works

No surprises, no pressure. Here's the whole process.

1

Schedule a service call

Tell us which doors are affected and what's happening — won't open, won't lock, readers dead, credentials rejected. We'll explain the service-call rate before anything is booked.

2

On-site diagnosis

We test the reader, controller, power, wiring, locking hardware, door alignment, and network connection to find the real cause — not just the obvious symptom.

3

Clear quote, approved by you

Before any repair, we explain what failed, what it takes to fix it, and what it costs. Nothing proceeds without your go-ahead.

4

Repair and verify

We make the repair, then test every affected door — unlock, re-lock, closer, and credential — in normal and emergency conditions before we leave.

Repair or Replace? We'll Tell You Honestly.

A door that won't open doesn't mean the system is dead. A single reader, strike, maglock, relay, power supply, or controller is usually practical to repair — and we'll repair it.

‍ ‍

Replacement or an upgrade only makes sense when:

‍ ‍

  • The controller or software is discontinued and no longer supported

  • Compatible readers and parts are gone

  • Failures keep recurring across multiple doors

  • The system can't do what the property now needs — mobile credentials, remote management, integration with intercom or cameras

‍ ‍

When that's the case, we'll show you what we found, explain why, and give you a straight price for a modern system — including how much of your existing wiring, strikes, maglocks, and reader locations can be reused. Even when the electronics have to go, the door hardware often doesn't.
